A device usually dies of one small thing. A charging port that stopped holding the cable. A battery down to half its capacity. A cracked screen, a failed fan, one key that no longer registers. Whether that small thing ends the device's life or costs an hour and a modest sum is decided years earlier, by people designing the inside of a case you will probably never open.
You can read those decisions before you buy, and they are more predictive of how long you keep something than most of the numbers you are comparing.
Can you get the part at all
Start here, because everything else is academic if the answer is no. Does the manufacturer sell spare parts to ordinary customers, or only to authorized repairers? Are the common wear items — battery, screen, charging port — among them? Is there a published service manual, or does the internet contain only guesswork and phone video?
Some regions now require manufacturers to keep parts available for a period after a product goes off sale, and to publish a repairability rating on the label. Where those labels exist, they are a real signal and cost nothing to read. Where they don't, the same question is answered by searching for the part name and seeing whether anything reputable comes up.
The other half of availability is software. Some devices refuse to fully accept a replacement part unless it is registered against the device, which can turn a straightforward swap into a warning message you live with forever, or into a job only an authorized shop can complete. This practice is contested and the rules are shifting, so check how the specific model behaves rather than assuming.
How it is held together
Open a teardown and look at the first two minutes. Screws are good news. Clips are fine. Adhesive that requires a heat mat, a suction cup, and a slow pass with a thin blade is the point at which most people decide to live with the fault instead.
- Battery attachment. Pull tabs or screws mean a fifteen-minute job. A battery glued flat to the chassis means solvent, patience, and a real risk of puncturing the cell.
- Screen access. Whether the display comes off first, or the whole machine has to be dismantled to reach it, changes the labor cost more than the part price does.
- Ports on daughterboards. A charging port on its own small board is a cheap replacement. The same port soldered to the mainboard is a soldering job or a new mainboard.
- Standard screws. Phillips and Torx heads mean any repair kit works. Unusual proprietary heads are a deliberate speed bump.
- Cables and connectors. Ribbon cables that route under the board mean more disassembly for every job that touches them.
None of this makes a glued device a bad device. Adhesive buys thinness and water resistance, and plenty of people would make that trade knowingly. The problem is making it unknowingly and finding out on the day the battery goes.
The cheapest repair is the one someone designed for. Everything else is you paying for a decision that was made without you.
The economics, honestly
Not everything is worth fixing, and pretending otherwise leads to a drawer of half-repaired equipment. A rough rule that holds up: if the repair costs more than about a third of what the working device is worth secondhand, think carefully. If it is the second expensive repair on the same machine, think harder.
That rule bends in two directions. It bends toward repair when the fault is a known wear item on an otherwise healthy machine — a battery, a fan, a keyboard — because those parts are cheap and the rest of the device has years left. It bends toward replacement when the fault is a mainboard, a water-damaged phone, or anything where the diagnosis itself costs money and might be wrong.

Doing it yourself, or not
Some repairs are genuinely beginner work: replacing a laptop drive, adding memory, swapping a fan, changing a battery held in with screws. The tools are inexpensive and the manuals are usually good. If a job takes fewer than ten steps and involves no adhesive, it is worth attempting.
Others are not. Anything with a heated adhesive seal, anything requiring a soldering iron, and anything where the failure mode is a punctured lithium cell belongs with someone who does it weekly. Independent shops are typically cheaper than official channels and often faster; the ones worth using will quote before starting and tell you when a repair is not worth doing.
Whoever does it, two things before you hand anything over. Back it up, because a repair can go wrong or a board can be swapped wholesale. And sign the device out of any account that would otherwise lock it — an activation lock left on is the most common way a repaired device comes back useless to everyone.
One more habit worth forming: keep the small parts. The spare screws, the plastic pry tool, the leftover adhesive strips from the last job. The second repair on a device is always easier than the first, and it is usually the one that makes the machine last another three years.
